More from our VP of Impact's (@kj_rediscovered) series on Black Superheroes. REPOST:Firestorm and William Jacob Knox ✨Jason Rusch is the dominant half of the superhero Firestorm. A teenager from Detroit, he first encountered the Firestorm Matrix while serving as a courier. During a battle between the original Firestorm host Ronnie Raymond and the Shadow Thief, Ronnie was defeated and Jason was exposed to residual energy that transformed his body and allowed him to access the Firestorm Matrix, turning him into the new Firestorm. Firestorm boasts a myriad of abilities, all based on his ability to manipulate matter at a cellular level, hence the nickname “Nuclear Man.” These abilities include matter transmutation, energy projection and manipulation, energy absorption, intangibility, density control, eidetic memory, thermal, microscopic and x-ray vision, regeneration and superhuman strength and durability. He was a key player in the Infinity Crisis and Blackest Night series. ⁠
William Jacob Knox, Jr. was an American chemist at Columbia University and served as the only African American supervisor for the Manhattan Project, a program dedicated to the creation the first nuclear weapons - one based on fission and the other based on implosion. He completed research on gaseous diffusion techniques used for the separation of uranium isotopes. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard and postgraduate work at MIT, earning a master’s degree in organic chemistry and chemical engineering. He was a profession in the chemistry department at North Carolina A&T College, and later became the head of the department of chemistry at HBCU Talladega College At the end of his scientific career, Knox become more involved in social activism, becoming an active member of his local NAACP chapter, being particularly interested in housing justice and civil rights. He is also one of the founding members of the Urban League of Rochester.⁠

A continuation of the Black Superhero series by our VP of Impact, @kj_rediscovered. 💫 REPOST: The original Captain Marvel (there was previously a male Captain Mar-Vell, and Carol Danvers came after, after dropping her original monicker Ms. Marvel), Monica Rambeau is a Lieutenant in the New Orleans Harbor Patrol, operating as a cargo ship captain. In an attempt to prevent the creation of a powerful weapon, she was exposed to extra-dimensional energy, which converted her body in pure energy. At various points she has been a member of different sects of the Avengers, including being the field leader of the Mighty Avengers in the Infinity storyline. Her powers include the ability to transform herself into any form of energy within the electromagnetic spectrum, control of cosmic rays, X-rays, ultraviolet radiation, visible light, electricity, infrared radiation, microwaves, radio waver, and neutrinos. With this power, she can travel through the vacuum of space, across time and dimensions. Along with the power of flight, she can also become invisible and intangible in any of her energy forms. Due to her energy consumption ability, she is immortal and does not age beyond her prime. ⁠

Lieutenant Colonel Shawna Rochelle Kimbrell is the first female African-American fighter pilot in the history of the United States Air Force. Currently stationed at Nellis Air Foce Base as a member of the 78th Squadron, she serves as an MQ-9 Pilot and Mission Commander. She knew that she wanted to be a fighter pilot in the 4th grade, and had her first flying lesson at 14, joined the Civil Air Patrol, and got her private pilot’s license. She graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1998 with a Bachelor’s Degree in General Engineering. She has been deployed to Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and even Italy where she served as Assistant Director of Operations for the 555 Fighter Squadron. She was even a part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004. Awards she has received include the Korean Defense Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and many others.

Here's another incredible design in the Black Superhero Series from our VP of Impact, @kj_rediscovered 💫 REPOST: Rubin "the Hurricane" Carter was an American middleweight boxer in the 1960s. With a record of 40- 12, he was a well recognized name in the boxing world. His substantial punching power and aggressive style led to several early knockouts and led to the nickname "Hurricane". In 1966, he and another man was arrested for a triple homicide at the Lafayette Bar and Grill in Paterson, New Jersey. They were initially stopped by police officers at 2:30, but were allowed to go. However, 45 minutes after that first encounter, they were stopped again and arrested. After being interrogated for 17 hours, he was released, only to be arrested again three weeks later. He was convicted of the murders and sentenced to life in prison, all the while maintaining his innocence. A retrial occurred in 1976, upholding the conviction. But in 1985, the conviction was overturned, and the Supreme Court declined the prosecutor's request for retrial. He spent 20 years in the Rahway State Prison. On October 14, 2005, he received two honorary Doctor of Law from York University and Griffith University in recognition of his work with AIDWYC and the Innocence Project. He also received the Abolition Award from Death Penalty Focus. Luke Cage is the first black superhero to be featured as the protagonist and title character of a comic book. Born Carl Lucas, he is a Harlem native who spent his youth as a member of the gang called the Rivals with his best friend William Stryker. However, in an act of jealousy, Stryker plants drugs in Carl's home, setting him up to be arrested, and he is sent to Seagate Prison. While in prison, he is used as a guinea pig by scientists trying to replicate the superhero serum that created Captain America. The treatment is accelerated past its intended limits, inducing body-wide enhancements that give him superhuman strength and durability. He uses his new power to escape Seagate and makes his way back to New York, where he decides to use his powers as a "hero for hire."⁠

📣 BIG NEWS! 📣 Lindsay Fox has officially transitioned from President and CEO of United Way Fresno and Madera Counties, after eight years of transformative leadership growing the organization in size, scope, impact and budget. As Fox exits to pursue other endeavors serving Central Valley residents, Kyle B. Rahn has been selected by the United Way board as Interim President and CEO.
